Symptoms of Worn Brake Pads and When to Replace Them

Brake pads are the one job a workshop gets judged on twice. Once when the customer collects the car, and again the first time they have to stop hard in traffic. Get the call right and you keep that customer for years. Get it wrong and you have a comeback, a scored disc and a conversation nobody enjoys.
The good news is that pads are honest. They tell you they are going long before they fail, if you know what to listen for and what to measure. Here is what worn pads sound like, feel like and measure, and the numbers that decide when they come off.
The symptoms of worn brake pads
Seven signs, roughly in the order you meet them.
A high pitched squeal when braking. Most pads carry a small metal wear indicator that starts to touch the disc as the friction material thins. That squeal is the pad asking to be measured. It is a warning, not yet a failure.
A grinding or growling noise. This one is different and it is urgent. Grinding usually means the friction material has gone and the backing plate is running on the disc. Every stop from here is cutting metal.
A longer pedal and a softer bite. The driver presses further before the car slows. Thin pads, worn shoes or air in the line will all do this, so treat it as a symptom to investigate rather than a diagnosis on its own.
Vibration or pulsing through the pedal. A pulse that appears only under braking usually points at the disc rather than the pad: uneven thickness, run out or a hot spot. Fitting new pads to a distorted disc simply repeats the fault.
The car pulling to one side. Uneven pad wear across an axle, or a sticking caliper slide pin, will brake harder on one wheel. Check both sides before you touch the pads.
Heavy brake dust or a visibly thin pad. A look through the wheel spokes tells you a lot. If the friction material looks close to the thickness of the backing plate behind it, get a gauge on it.
A brake warning lamp. Many newer cars carry electronic pad wear sensors. By the time that lamp is on, the pad has already reached the manufacturer replacement point.
When to replace brake pads: the thickness that decides it
Mileage is a guide. Thickness is the answer. Measure the friction material only, never including the steel backing plate.

Treat 3 mm as the working rule and check the service data for the model in front of you, because manufacturer minimums vary. Some European cars call for replacement at 3 mm, some Indian hatchbacks run safely a little lower, and a few performance pads are thinner from new. When you are unsure, replace.
A wear percentage is not a substitute for a measurement. Forty percent left means nothing until you know what the pad started at.
Front and rear pads do not wear at the same rate
Weight transfers forward every time a car slows, so the front brakes typically handle around seventy percent of the work. Front pads commonly wear about twice as fast as the rear. That is why a car can arrive with fronts at 3 mm and rears still sitting at 7 mm.
Two rules that save comebacks:
• Replace pads as an axle set. All four pads across the front, or all four across the rear. Never one wheel and never one pad.
• Check the rear even when the fronts are the complaint. It costs two minutes and it prevents a second visit.
Brake shoes and rear drums
A large share of Indian hatchbacks still run drum brakes at the rear: the Alto, WagonR, Celerio and the base variants of Swift, Dzire and plenty of others. Shoes wear more slowly than pads, so they get overlooked until the handbrake stops holding properly.
Look for the same story in a different form: a scraping noise from the rear, a handbrake that needs more travel than it used to, or a lining sitting close to the rivets. As a working rule, replace bonded linings under 2 mm and riveted linings once the material is within 1 mm of the rivet heads. Check the drum for scoring and ovality while it is off the car.
Do you need to replace the discs at the same time?
Not always, but check every time. The pad is the consumable. The disc is the wear surface, and it carries a minimum thickness stamped on the hub face, usually marked MIN TH.
Replace the disc when:
• Measured thickness is at or below the stamped minimum.
• There is a deep lip at the outer edge, or scoring you can catch a fingernail in.
• There is a pulse under braking that a skim will not correct.
• The surface is heavily corroded after a long stand, which is common through the monsoon.
Fitting fresh pads to a worn or distorted disc gives poor bedding, noise and an early comeback. If the discs are staying on, clean and deglaze the surface before the new pads go anywhere near it.
How long do brake pads last on Indian roads?
There is no single number, and any supplier who gives you one is guessing. What actually decides pad life:
• City against highway: Stop start city traffic can halve pad life compared with steady highway running.
• Load and duty cycle: Fleet taxis, school vans and loaded commercial runs wear pads far faster than a private car doing the school run.
• Terrain: Hill routes eat pads when the driver brakes down a descent instead of using the gears.
• Pad quality: A genuine OEM or OES pad holds its friction material and its stopping performance far longer than a cheap copy that fades once it gets hot.
• Driver habit: Riding the brake pedal is the single biggest variable, and the one nobody admits to.
For most Indian passenger cars, front pads land somewhere between 25,000 and 50,000 km. Treat that as a planning range for your stock, not as a service interval.
The monsoon factor
July is the wrong month to be relaxed about brakes. Wet roads mean more braking and longer stopping distances. Water, grit and road slush work their way between pad and disc and act as a grinding paste, so a set that measured comfortably in May can be noticeably thinner by September. Cars that stand overnight in the wet also pick up surface rust on the disc, which the pad then scrubs off over the first few stops.

What workshops should stock
Brake work rarely arrives with notice. A car comes in for something else, the pads measure 3 mm, and the job either happens today or the customer takes it elsewhere. Holding stock depth on fast moving pad and shoe sets for the models you see most is one of the easiest margin wins available to a workshop.
