Stocking brake pads is a margin decision disguised as a technical one. Hold too many lines and your cash sits on a shelf. Hold too few and you turn away the job or fit whatever is in the drawer. Most workshops resolve this by picking a brand and staying loyal to it, which is a reasonable instinct and slightly the wrong question.

The pad that comes back with a complaint is almost never wrong because of the badge on the box. It is wrong because the friction material did not suit how the car is used. So start there.

Material first, brand second

Every brake pad is a block of friction material bonded to a steel backing plate. What that material is made of decides almost everything the customer will notice: how quiet the car is, how much black dust lands on the wheels, how the brakes feel when cold, how well they hold up on a long descent, and how quickly the discs wear out underneath.

The brand decides something different but equally important to you: whether the batch you get next month behaves like the batch you got last month, and whether you can actually source the fitment when a car is on the lift.

The naming is not standardised across the industry, so a pad sold as ceramic by one supplier may be closer to low metallic in composition. Read the specification rather than the marketing name, and judge by how the pad behaves on cars you know.

Ceramic against semi metallic: the question customers actually ask

This is the comparison that dominates the search results, and it is usually asked in the wrong form. There is no universally better material. There is only the material that suits the duty.

A privately owned hatchback doing 600 km a month in city traffic never gets its brakes properly hot. Its owner notices two things: whether the car squeals at low speed, and whether the alloy wheels turn black between washes. Ceramic wins that argument comfortably.

A seven seater carrying a full load down a ghat road, or a taxi doing 8,000 km a month, has the opposite problem. Those brakes get hot and stay hot, and cold bite is irrelevant because they are rarely cold. Semi metallic wins there, and the extra noise is a fair trade for the heat capacity.

Most Indian passenger cars sit between those two, which is why a quality low metallic pad is the sensible default for the bulk of what comes through a general workshop.

Where the brands sit

A brief and deliberately non committal orientation, because supply, range and pricing move constantly and you should verify current coverage for your own model mix rather than take a blog at its word.

Bosch: A global tier one supplier with a broad Indian aftermarket presence across multiple part categories, which makes it easy to consolidate ordering.
Brembo: Positioned at the premium and performance end. Coverage of mainstream Indian passenger car fitments is narrower than its brand recognition suggests, so check availability for the models you actually service before committing shelf space.
Uno Minda: A large Indian component manufacturer with an established aftermarket brand and domestic supply chain, which usually means better availability on high volume Indian fitments.

The practical test is not which name is most respected. It is which supplier can give you the fitment you need, in the grade you want, on the day the car is in your bay. Consistency of supply beats brand prestige every time in a business that lives on turnaround.

What to look for on the box

• ECE R90 approval, the homologation standard confirming the replacement performs within a defined margin of the original part.
• Clear fitment reference to the specific model, generation and variant, not just the model name.
• Included fitting hardware such as shims, clips and wear sensors where the vehicle uses them.
• Sealed, properly marked packaging from a supplier who can trace where the part came from.

That last point matters more than any brand debate. Counterfeit brake pads exist, they are convincing in the box, and they fail exactly when the car needs them most.

Then hold depth on the five or six fitments you replace most often, and source the rest on demand. Depth on fast movers beats breadth on slow ones, because the slow ones can arrive the same day if your supplier is close enough.

Fitting notes that prevent comebacks

• Replace pads as a full axle set, never one wheel and never one pad.
• Measure the disc every time and check it against the minimum thickness stamped on the hub face.
• Clean and deglaze the disc surface if the discs are staying on the car.
• Bed the pads in with a series of moderate stops before returning the car.
• Never mix materials across an axle, which causes uneven braking and pull.
